We came from Boston to Santa Fe on a trip so booking a Valentine's day dinner from 2000 miles away was a little stressful. This place did not dissapoint!!! To start the restaurant is beautiful, limited seating (but they did not crowd the tables together to fit more guests) and intimate. The waiting staff was very friendly and knowledgable, giving both advice on the dishes as well as pairings with wine. Now the food, oh the food! Started with the escargots which I've never had. The chef prepared them with slivered almonds, ham, cherry tomatoes and garlic. They were amazing and I would go back solely for them. My fiancé had the braised short rib for dinner which was seasoned perfectly, and the green chilie mashed potatoes were the perfect compliment. I had the elk tenderloin, never had it before and I would recommend anyone to order this dish. I believe they were served with a red wine poached pear, AMAZING. I could not find a single thing wrong with this place even if I tried and anyone looking for a beautiful meal prepared with an artists touch would be a fool to pass this place.

Great restaurant! Excellent appetizers and main courses could use some work on their desserts though. My family went on Christmas Eve and loved it. Friendly staff that knew the menu and had a large selection of wines. Definitely recommend!

Came for lunch. Food was quite good, as was service. Prices very reasonable for the quality. My only complaint was that the fries were subpar compared with the quality of the rest of the fare. They didn't seem to be fresh cut, or if they were they just weren't prepared properly, they were bland and limp. Will be back though.

Excellent dinner with tempura zucchini blossoms stuffed with goat cheese and a lobster/apple salad with lots of lobster. It was a pleasant temperature to sit on the patio but there is way too much street noise.

Stumbled into L'Olivier tonight while looking for another restaurant and glad I did---what a find!! Lovely patio setting, attentive service and each dish was terrific. I can recommend the arrugula fig salad and ahi tartare starters, elk and halibut mains and triple chocolate and apple tartin desserts. Only in Santa Fe a few days but may try L'Olivier again---highest compliment in a town of superb restaurants!!!

Fantastic French food at great prices! The staff is very friendly and attentive. You have to come try this place out for yourself. The owners are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, too.

The service was impeccable and very accommodating. We had the escargot and the soup of the day which was mushroom soup. It was not too rich and full of flavor. The short ribs were amazing as were the pepper jack mashed potatoes! I highly recommend this place.

Had a late dinner with my partner and parents on Friday night. The hostess (perhaps the owner) was very friendly, the food was incredible but the service was poor. The server bordered on rude and aloof. In hindsight we should have complained while we were there. In spite of the delicious coq au vin, the experience was disappointing.

We ate at l'Olivier this evening for the second time and for the second time had a delicious dinner. I am not going to get into specifics about our dinner but will just say that the chef is very talented. We sat outside and that was the one thing wrong with the experience. While the patio was comfortable, every few minutes motorcycles or trucks spewing toxic exhaust went by and that was a bummer. Sit inside if you don't want to listen to the noise or have toxic fumes competing with the aromas of the delicious food. Really good restaurant and they use real candles, not the cheesy fake battery-operated ones. The small touches go a long way.

My husband and I ate here last night - one of the very best meals we have had in Santa Fe! Anthony was our waiter and was terrific. Knowledgeable about the menu & wine and made great pairing suggestions. We started by splitting the Arugula, Fig & Goat Cheese salad - perfect for two and came plated for each of us. My husband had the Elk which was perfectly cooked and presented - perfect portion size too. I had the Salmon with black rice and Kale - also perfect. This was our first visit and certainly won't be our last. Oh, and had a perfect Kir Royale too!

The food was so fantastic. I especially loved the stuffed squash blossom appetizer and next visit will have that as an entree I loved it so much. The only thing that made the meal less than perfect is that the waiter was pressing us to order our food even before he served our wine and appetizers. I felt rushed.

We enjoyed one of the best meals of our lives tonight! Fabulous!! We started with the arugula salad and foie gras du jour, then shared the elk as our main course. The Foie gras was exceptional and the best we ever had, such a treat! I think I soaked up all the extra raspberry sauce because I didn't want to waste a drop. We came here to try the elk because we have never had it before and we were so glad we tried it. It was so tender that I used my butter knife to cut it. Then came dessert choices, I ordered the creme puff and my hubby got the chocolate opera cake. Once again....the best dessert ever! Thank you chef Xavier for such a memorable and delicious meal. The staff was amazing and the atmosphere just what we wanted for a romantic evening. Thank you so much for such an enjoyable evening.

My husband and I ate there last night -we both had the salmon. It was incredible! Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Highly recommend this restaurant!!

The food was excellent! One of the better meals we've had in Santa Fe, and we come often; about 4 times a year. Definitely worth going. Husband had the elk and I was blown away at the wine reduction sauce and the tenderness of the elk. The waiter's recommendation of a Cote de Rhone to accompany the meal was perfect. Spot on!! I had the lobster salad and escargots. Both of the items were also as superb. The salad had a beautiful mix of flavors that melded together to please the palate. The escargots were delightful. Loved the ambiance!

Excellent food and wine, ordered the specials of the evening and it was a memorable experience. The staff was very accommodating and attentive. Would definitely return.

Authentic, cozy and delicious. This is a newer addition to a frequently vacant spot with one of those bad luck "je ne sais quois" about it. I had a truly enjoyable and refreshing evening from the Santa Fe norms that I'm just blatantly exhausted by lately.

Yesterday evening my wife and I dined at L'Olivier for a celebratory dinner. Rather than order at random, we asked if a chef's tasting menu were available, paired with wines, and Chef Xavier offered a succession of tuna carpaccio, foie gras, branzino, elk, and layered french cake. Wines I recall (there were several!) included a sauvignon blanc, a sparkling white, a sauterne (perfectly paired with the foie gras by the way), and I believe a bordeaux (not sure here). These appear to correspond to wines in the menu listed on the L'Olivier web site. All courses were prepared and presented elegantly with appropriate European-style portion sizes and attentiveness to the flow of my wife's and my enjoyment of the meal. The foie gras and the Elk were particular standouts. I expected a lighter wallet at the end of the meal but ended up with the total expense significantly less than I anticipated for a meal of this quality and complexity. Reminded me very much of dinners my wife and I enjoyed in France when living in Europe years ago. Thanks to Chef Xavier and to Whitney for a memorable dinner!

A beautiful Christmas dinner. The meal fabulous and the setting charming. Thanks for making our event memorable. Natalie makes everyone feel at home and welcomed as family, Our waiter Anthony was attentive but not intrusive.

Came here the day after Valentine's with my parents and sister who was visiting from out of town. Service was dreadful- our meal took 2 hours and none of us ordered appetizers so the reason for the wait was our completely inattentive waiter. Food was decent and decently priced. The table they sat the four of us (grown adults, myself pregnant) would have been cozy for two but was absurd for four. We spent the majority of the (loud- sound is definitely an issue here) meal jostling for position under the table for our legs. It took at least the first hour to get our meals ordered and the clock ticked over into the second hour as our entrees hit the table. It's a shame as this restaurant could be promising with the good food and the excellent location. As a local hotel owner, I won't be recommending this to my guests with such poor service.

A great restaurant. Been there three times and haven't been disappointed. Excellent food well prepared. Extremely obliging staff. Elise is a real treasure of a wait-person. When Santa Fe is so full of help with attitude she stands heads above all others! Charming, intelligent and beautiful. Enough gushing. This place reminds me of my now bygone old SF favorites: La Traviata and Trattoria Nostrami. Tomas is another great waiter. Very professional, and engaging with a good sense of humor. I could go on and on about the food, but you'll just have to go for yourself to find out why. Had dinner on the patio on a beautiful SF evening. Everything perfect; even the "local color" was amusing and fun to watch. Saw some great cars. So nice to see this location making a success after so many disasters in the past. Richard Barrett

Had the Coq au Vin, which was very good. Had the triple chocolate dessert and ate every bit of it. Not overly expensive, but not cheap. The food is not good enough to make this a regular haunt, but it's worth a visit. Reservations recommended.

One of my favorites in Santa Fe. Creative menu, delicious food a reasonable and complete wine list. . Prices are reasonable for th e great food. Service is good. Owner is delightful. Outdoor dining and bar are charming. Try the snails. Fish is always fresh

Sadly, not ready for prime time. Service was lacking and food was inconsistent (my dish was so so, but my guest's was quite good). It has wonderful potential and was packed for lunch. The owners couldn't be nicer, by the way, and I'll be back, but only 3 stars this time.

In a very quaint corner spot, this noisy bussling country restaurant has truly fine food. Our server, Elise was terrific in helping us chose excellent dishes and corresponding wines. The pork rib with cabbage in mustard sauce was delicious as was the scallops. Our friends had the lamb shank and coq au vi and loved their dishes. We finished with desserts that were equally as good. Bill per couple including a glass of wine each, one shared lobster appetizer, 2 entrees and one shared dessert was $100. Well worth it My only criticism was that with surrounding tables filled and high ceilings, the noise level was really high but other than that, an excellent experience

Formerly at Ristra in Santa fe, catering to the film superstars and the local socialites, Chef Xavier and his wife have taken the leap to their own spread and it will pay off! Best downtown location- corner of Galisteo and W. ALameda with an outside patio! We bravely went to the new L'Olivier for Valentine's Day and it was perfectly special even on a busy night. The staff is tight and have worked together before obviously! We had the escargot appetizer to start and a great choice - not the usual shell stuff. The Lamb shank was perfectly slow cooked and the wilted greens were a great compliment. My favorite and always just Xavier perfect is the filet steak au poivre with just the right amount of peppercorn and the sauce not overbearing served over scalloped potatoes and with asparagus. The perfect paring suggestion was with a Bordeaux that Justin the staff wine steward picked! As if that was not enough, we had to try the triple layer mousse -milk chocolate, dark and white chocolate layered in a glass - ah yes! it was divine and well Valentine's Day! The dessert wine selection was also nice and the port a perfect end to a good meal! We will be back again and again!

First time at L'Oliver. Food was tasty; creative; presented nicely; and overall a nice addition to the Santa Fe restaurant options. Service was good but not sophisticated. The food runner was not impressive nor gave the food presentation any panache at all. We would have given an overall rating of 4 stars (on the Santa Fe scale) but the singer outside on the patio could not hold a note. It was truly uncomfortable. We were relieved when they took a break.

Very good food. Service and decor above average. Wine fairly priced. We have 45 yrs and 3 restaurants from the ground up in our past. Worth the visit. Prices fair for what you get. A & P Soracco

What a wonderful surprise! The building has had so many businesses over the years that I was just a bit dubious about this new venture. But the food was great as well as the service. And the prices were reasonable. I look forward to my next meal at L ' Olivier.

Been there twice, and i like what the ownwe has done with the space. Comfortable and pretty setting. Still, both times i went, and had asparagus soup, vegetable pitivier or the asparagus salad without the jamon, and all 3 were uninspiring. I think that this menu needs a better effort. Don't go if you are a vegetarian or don't eat pork or shellfish.

Excellent French gourmet dinner restaurant run by Nathalie Bonnard from France. They have a superb and tender achiote seasoned elk dish. Wine list is small but good. Just wished they had crepes on the menu. I ate there in the winter and we were greeted in the outer courtyard by a round crackling campfire. Some improvements could be made with chairs that were not as comfortable as they should be. I found the seating banquet is narrow and uncomfortable and as my adjoining table also experienced beautifully hung pillow backings that fell off their hangers.

Fantastic meal! Elk medallions with sweet potato purée, mushrooms and snap peas. Everything cooked perfectly and the flavors were outstanding. First time I've ever had a Ike on my face after every single bite. I Will definitely come back to this place when I return to Santa Fe.

Could be the best meal I've had in our two years in Santa Fe. Ambiance was very nice and the service, while a bit lacking confidence, was excellent on all counts. But the food was what blew me away. Portion size, for a pricey place, was just right. The gravlax was spectacular - very high quality smoked salmon with perfect quantities of very tender and tasty kale and mild yet exciting red onion confit. A brilliant combination, executed perfectly. But, outdone by the elk tenderloin. Again, ample but not gross portion size with an absolutely transformational red wine reduction with red currant jelly - amply covering the tender and tasty elk and "sides" of mashed root vegetable, sugar peas and what I think was pears masquerading as beets. [the online menu which I'm using to remind me - seems to be different from what was actually served] Ok, so we might have known what we were doing when we mentioned it was our anniversary, but after skipping dessert, the house gifted us a lovely amuse bouche dessert with a candle and no singing (thank goodness) Only one meal to go by but we'll be back soon and will report more.

Came here on the 6th day it was open with a total party of 4 people. The restaurant was pretty full and it was hard to hear the others across the table. But the food is above average and a couple of stand outs were the bread and dessert. My husband and I split the warm asparagus salad with spanish ham and cheese for an appetizer. This was a nice starter but didn't knock my socks off. For the main course, I had the duck breast with sauteed turnips. It was a good duck breast but again, did not knock my socks off. I thought my husband's suckling pig was better (juicy and very tender). But the real star of the meal was the triple chocolate dessert served in a glass. If you order this dessert, you should order your own because it is so good you won't want to split it. Dark chocolate ganache on the bottom of the glass, milk chocolate mousse in the middle, and a very light mint white chocolate mousse on top. It was crazy good! The prices are pretty reasonable for being Santa Fe and a french restaurant at that. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area looking for a bistro.

Every dish has some attractive points. The service was sophisticated. The cost-performance was great (during RW). I would like to visit again when I am in a mood of french-bistro. Came here for dinner on Friday. A shop owner in Santa Fe recommended this place to us. We were two, and had made reservation at 8:00pm, but we needed to wait for 15 mins at the bar corner. All the tables were packed with young and elder, couples and groups. Even I had to wait, I instantly became a fan of the energetic but noisy atmosphere, and the kind and sophisticated crews. We had the Restaurant Week menus (3 course, $30!) and 4 glasses of wines. We ordered - arugula fig salad, escargot sauteed with garlic butter, duck breast sauteed with orange aside potato baked au gratin, 2 desserts ( - my memory was not clear but something like puff with hazelnut paste, and cheese cake with pistachio) The salad was great volume and tasted very good. Minimum but adequate impact of dressing, not salty nor "wet", good combination with subtle arugula taste. I loved it! The duck was also good, but the potato gratin was salty. I thought it had too strong taste aside the main, the duck. The puff dessert was so-so. The cheese cake was good.

Trying to think of nice things to say. Waiter was great. Food was really ho-hum. Three of us had Appetizers: poblano pepper was good but overpoweringly Southwestern, eggplant/tuna cannelloni was cold and just ok - no pasta here which wasn't explained on menu, and soup was excellent cream of mushroom. Entrees were prawns (great), duck (served too well done for requested medium rare) and a very tough almost inedible short ribs. Our waiter graciously offered replacement which arrived little better and cold in the middle, making me suspect a frozen reheat. Short ribs when done right are supposed to be tender and all that tough stuff should turn gelatinous. Lucky for me my husband has a big appetite, so he ate it. I wish I could say we'll go here again, but we won't.

Fabulous French meal with superb service, and priced quite reasonably. I had the Coq au Vin, and my wife had the Sauteed Scottish Salmon. Both were wonderful. Highly recommended.

A good neighborhood bistro with some problems that they can fix. Foie gras appetizer excellent 5/5 Beef ribs excellent 5/5 Mashed potatoes and asparagus very good 4/5 Crackling pork soggy skin 3/5 (it takes effort to make skin of roast pork soggy, so a review of storage technique?) Potato au gratin too much salt 3/5 (since the question of too much salt showed up in other review, perhaps there could be an issue?) Choux pastry dessert - soggy 2/5 (made days in advance and left sitting) Bread cut hours in advance, so dry at the edges 2/5 Understaffed on Monday night, so service a bit vague. Some tables and bar stools of regulars who enjoy the place and the food. We will go back again, but with some caution as to our choices.

We had dinner in a group of six and the service and food were excellent. The cheese stuffed squash blossoms were particularly noteworthy. All the entrees we had were delightful. The elk tenderloin and glazed suckling pig were my favorites. The branzino (sea bass) and swordfish special were also good. The desserts were fun. We tried the Opera (an almond cake), the Paris (a cream puff), and the Tarte Tatin (caramelized apple) and enjoyed them all.

  • Mona M.

Very good service, and excellent appetizers. However, the wine we wanted was not in stock, my husband's salmon was raw in the middle, and after sending it back, it was still undercooked. The desserts were great, and everyone very nice.

My mother and I went to L'Olivier recently and found it wonderful except for a few suggestions. My mom's short ribs were excellent, rich flavor and fall off the bone tender. The foie gras was so smooth and buttery with a slightly sweet wine sauce, however, for $22 it was very petite. The suckling pig was so-so and a disappointment, not flavorful. The lobster salad was excellent, the lobster sweet. Service could be improved and hopefully they'll keep improving. The service was too slow (and I am one who likes to take my time) and disjointed, one would take our order and then disappear, then I had to get up and ask another waiter to take our order again. Same procedure with our wine and at a time when I wanted to relax after a long day. I'm used to dining in France and love the leisurely way they let us linger over our meal without interrupting us to take one person's plate while the other is still eating (when they do that I feel like I'm eating alone and have to hurry which I guess is the point). Isn't it silly to have them ask, 'are you still WORKING on it?' At the end of the day I'm done with work and if I have to 'work' at eating my meal something's wrong. It would be wonderful if L'Olivier was successful and has a long life in Santa Fe and with a few improvements I'm sure it will.

OK, only 5 stars because I can't leave more. Food is ridiculously good. Homemade pâté, arugula & fig salad, warm asparagus w/ jamon & manchego...fabulous starters. Duck is sublime. Most importantly, they know how to make a proper Kir Royale. Wine list is strong & well priced. It's only been open a week so service has some kinks to work out. That said, the staff is friendly & accommodating, making the atmosphere relaxed & welcoming. Once discovered, this place will be difficult to book.

Sadly, never again. Tried to support this place because we so enjoyed the food when the chef worked at Ristra. Strangely, the food at his new venture, L'Olivier, has ranged from ok, fine, to pretty good. It has never been stellar, but we still went occasionally. The service has also never been stellar (which is annoying) but it has never been atrocious - until last night. One waitperson (who has always been there when we've gone) and one non-english speaking busser were all that were on duty. The waitress was combative, condescending, slow, and rude. If she worked for me, and spoke to my clients that way, she'd be fired. The busser was friendly, but fairly useless. Oh, and last night the food was so salty, I had to send mine back. They took it off the bill, but free bad food is still bad food. There are just too many superb choices to settle for mediocrity - and rude mediocrity, at that. Our current favorite is Terra Cotta on Johnson Street. $6 glasses of very fine wine before 6PM. Open every day. Fabulous food, friendly waitstaff, and a real sense that they want and appreciate the business. Oh - and the parking is not the nightmare you get on Galisteo Street. Tell them Susan and Howell sent you!

As a flaming Francophile, I thought this meal was wonderful. The squash soup with foie gras was great. The special was cassoulet, totally authentic and superb. With the squash soup, I had a Gavroche beer, a biere de grade from the Flanders region of France. I had never seen this beer before, but it's worth seeking out. With the cassoulet I had a glass of Planet Oregon 2012 pinot noir. Not a wine I had heard of before. And I generally don't like pinot noir this young. But this one was quite delightful, as befits the mission statement of Planet Oregon. In general, my impression was that the wine prices per bottle on the menu are close to retail, not three times retail as frequently occurs in restaurants. Now the not so good news. My wife was not as thrilled as I was. She is a vegetarian, and she thought the vegetarian offerings were typical of cooks who are not vegetarians. Although she liked the arugula salad, she thought that a bit more variety in the greens would have been desirable. She ordered the vegetarian entree, which was a squash risotto. I sampled the risotto and thought it was pretty tasty. Oh well. She also commented that the accompanying broccoli was overcooked. For her, the rating is three stars. We shared the opera cake, which I thought was good until it reminded me of Fernand Point's marjolaine. Too bad I had to make that association. We liked the fresh flowers at every table. And service was fabulous.

Tops at every level. Amazing food, wonderful wines, and A++ service. My friend and I were staying literally steps away at The Inn of the Governors, and it was wonderful to dine and then a short stroll to the Plaza to enjoy downtown Santa Fe on a lovely summers night.
